Sy Rosefelt

Sy Rosefelt

On display in the SCAC office, at the Casselberry Art House from November 1-30

Sy Rosefelt was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee but he pursued what has become a lifelong interest in drawing and painting by joining the Milwaukee Men's Sketch club. His title of "Night Owl Chairman" put him in contact with local art critics who once a month constructively critiqued the member's art. The club also met once a week to draw and paint from live models.

In this club, Sy mingled with artists from literally all walks of life. They painted together and shared their love of art and networked. The group also held shows together and met with other clubs. Continuing to extend his art knowledge, Sy is an avid reader of art history and the life of artists. His favorites include William Turner, Whistler, Homer, the Impressionists and the Post Impressionists.

His architectural renderings were sparked when he met the"Painted Ladies"(Victorian homes in San Francisco). These "Ladies" presented themselves as a challenge. They are "like puzzles to be put together to bring out their personalities". To Rosefelt, the houses are like portraits of people. This eventually led to his Home Portrait business.

He also enjoys painting landscapes and people involved in various activities and plein air painting (outdoor painting). Rosefelt is adept in photography amd his media preferences are watercolor, pen and ink, pencil, acrylic and pastel. Rosefelt has been living and painting in Florida for the last 25 years and considers he is a "native by choice". Presently he's an active member in the Central Florida Watercolor Society where he is the group Historian. Sy also presides over their plein air (outdoor painting) program. He also makes photographic records of their meetings, club demonstrations and group shows.

"I have led an honest life and hope my art reflects it. I hope you enjoy viewing it as much as I did creating it."

Creative Sanford Kicks Off Community Cultural Project

January 12th 2008

Officers and friends of the not-for-profit organization, Creative Sanford, Inc. are finalizing arrangements to bring the “Swamp Gravy” folk life performance to Sanford in January 2008.  Swamp Gravy originated in the agricultural community of Colquitt, Georgia and has become an economic powerhouse in the region by producing an annual original performance and generating over two million dollars in revenue.

The performances are based on the oral histories of the town’s residents and include family stories, local legends, and community history.  Creative Sanford is hosting the Swamp Gravy troupe of over thirty performers in order to introduce Sanford residents to the concept of a community based performance.  If enough community interest is expressed, Creative Sanford will begin development of a performance based on the rich cultural heritage of Sanford.  By suggestion of Mayor Linda Kuhn, the production is to be dubbed “Celery Soup.” Jeanine Taylor, president of Creative Sanford, says “We are genuinely excited about creating a special project around the stories of longtime Sanford residents.

This will be a unique way for community members to come together and preserve a bit of our town’s history.”  The group will rely on collecting oral histories from residents in order to create an original production featuring music and a volunteer cast.

The January 12th performance of Swamp Gravy will take place at the Helen Stairs Theatre in Historic Downtown Sanford, 203 South Magnolia Avenue.  Tickets are available for $10 and $15 at the box office.  The box office can be reached at 407-321-8111 or visit www.HelenStairsTheatre.com

For more details on the performance, call Jeanine Taylor at 407-323-2774 or email her at info@jtfolkart.com

Contemporary Quilts

October 21-November 30, 2007

Elements from The Front Range Contemporary Quilters, opening on October 22 through November 30, 2007 is a dazzling survey of some of the most innovative quilt work being done today. Many of these contemporary quilt artists incorporate highly unconventional materials in their work, such as paint, paper beads, metal and wood. Today’s art quilts, show a wide range of creativity that melds ideas of home and hearth with cutting edge technologies of the digital age. Elements from the Front Range Contemporary Quilters is toured by Exhibits USA, which is the national touring division of Mid-America Arts Alliance, a non-profit regional arts organization based in Kansas city, Missouri.

Museum Coordinator, Karen Jacobs and quilter will also showcase some of her quilts called “Friends and Family.”

In addition, two 600 year old shawls owned by the Haines family will be on display. These two shawls were made in the 15 century in Spain. History relates they at one time were owned by Charles V11, Emperor of France in 1493. They were brought to Mexico by Empress Charlotte, wife of Emperor Maximilian who was shot by the Mexicans. The shawls were confiscated by the Mexican government with her personal property while trying to save her husband. In 1901 General Diaz of Mexico sold the two shawls to Congressman Haines of Florida for $5,000, on tenth of their value at that time. The two shawls traveled around the country appearing at Expositions in 1928 but have not been seen on display since. The Haines family has graciously consented to exhibit the shawls once again to the public.

Admission is Free.

BASIC DRAWING AND OIL PORTRAIT PAINTING
Art Instruction

At Owens' studio or the student's home. Ongoing private instruction. Flexible hours.

This is an ongoing private class designed for one or two people. It may be held in the student's home or at Brian Owens' studio in Deltona. For one student in his studio: The price is $20 per hour with a 3-hour minimum. For two students in his studio: The price is $30 per hour with a 3-hour minimum. A reasonable charge for mileage will be added if he travels more than 30 miles from his studio (one way) to the student. Materials and supplies are not included.

Owens specializes in teaching basic "classical" skills that will form a foundation the student can build on. Owens will tailor his instruction to match the student's level of skill and personal artistic goals. If the "goal" is unknown, that's fine too. The content, pace and density of the instruction is fully adjustable. The student's level of skill isn't nearly as important as his or her state of mind and desire to learn. Owens will recommend specific materials and supplies prior to the class.

For more information kindly contact Brian Owens directly at 386-956-1724 or Email brian@brianowensart.com. To see his work kindly visit his web site at www.brianowensart.com
